The Last Day
New Year’s Eve.
The most celebrated holiday in the world. Why is it we wait
until the final day of the year to recollect our past decisions? Why is it we
wait until the final day of the year to make a “resolution” for the upcoming
year? Societal cliché that making “resolutions” is an unspoken rule. But why
wait? What is the purpose of waiting for the final day of the year? We can
obtain small goals throughout the year and even if we do not make to the finish
line, we can try again. We lie to ourselves or give ourselves false hope. False
enthusiasm, which only leads to failed “resolutions”. We promise ourselves
things that may not be obtainable, yet when we fail and look back and chalk in
up to a bad year. 2012 bad year because I got caught by the police. 2014 bad
year because I lost a job I loved, etc. What makes an ENTIRE year bad, one
thing? Multiple? If that was the case what was fucking 2020, a disastrous year?
An abomination? I think we are quick to project our lives overall when it is so
much more than that. Life is not only what YOU make it, but also where you take
yourself. A few hiccups are bound to happen to anyone along the way. Maybe the
select few do not experience hiccups, but 2020 was a hard year for everyone.
Regardless of, if you struggled or not, it was hard mentally. It tore us down
and made us really look in the mirror and accept the person we saw staring back
at us. Many did not make it; many lost that internal battle with themselves.
The point? Is in the question. Why do we wait until the final day of the year
to decide what kind of life we are going to live the next year? It is what
society tells us to do. We have come to be susceptible to the societal role and
follow the masses, but is that really living your life? You are living your
life by someone else’s standards of you. No, and that is why I think we forget
that life goes on, with or without your false guidance. I will not be bias in
this. I know that we are so used to following when we should be leading
ourselves into success. Success is not just one year, it is many. So instead of
making “resolutions” at the end of the year, let’s make small goals to obtain
over a span of time. The best part? If we do not make the goal or miss our
deadline, we do not chalk it up to a bad year, but a bad day. Because tomorrow
is another one and it is not promised. Truly seeing the positives in everything
that we do. Not just the “resolutions”. So, whether it is losing weight by the
end of the year, quitting smoking, or finding love. Reminding ourselves at the
end of our journey that no matter what the scale says, how many times you
cheated and smoked or failed love; that we keep a positive mind. Remember that
we still have a chance to obtain all these things that we want.
In the end, reminding ourselves to keep a positive focus can
only help us obtain future small goals quicker. Yes, as I said before tomorrow
is not promised, but there is nothing wrong with wanting tomorrow. Truly, working
towards something to better yourself. In any way, no matter the nature. People
get so caught up in the nonsense they tend to forget who they are. So, find who
you are, lead the pack and dream big, because in one way or another. All dreams
come true, in the literary and spiritual sense. So here we are in the third week of 2023, what will you achieve this year?
